Umaid Ali Sathio – from a private student to a teacher and an author

Umaid Ali Sathio – a high school teacher (HST) and an author of several books in Sindhi – could not have continued his education if Shams ul Haq Ansari of Hala had not been posted to the village as the secretary of union council Saeed Matto. He offered free tuition to the villagers, including Umaid Ali, and encouraged them to continue their secondary and higher secondary education as private students.

Umaid Ali was one of the villagers who never looked back. He did the matric from Government High School Tando Muhammad Khan, and Master of Education (MEd) from University of Sindh, old campus.

These days, apart from teaching at the Government High School Abdul Rahim Katiar as HST, Umaid Ali is busy in authoring books on the local history and culture. His published books include:

  1.  سٺيا ذات Sathia Caste (two parts)
  2.  سيد پريل شاه ڏاڏا سائينءَ جو تاريخي ۽ شجرائتي احوال About Syed Paryal Shah Dada Sain and his Ancestry
  3.  سنڌ جا ڪجھ اهم شهر Significant Towns of Sindh

T M Khan villagers conduct baseline survey and launch website

Villagers of Syed Matto Shah, Taluka Bulri Shah Karim, District Tando Muhammad Khan, Sindh have launched a village website after conducting a baseline demographic survey.

The initiative was taken after the establishment of a community organisation ‘My Village Community, Syed Matto Shah’ that involved representatives from all the seven mohallahs (streets) of the village.

The initial results of the survey show that the village has a population of over 600, comprising of 56 per cent males and 44 per cent females.

Majority of the villagers, 93 per cent, are Muslims who speak Sindhi. The remaining seven per cent are Hindus and speak Gujarati.

Income and expense figures reveal an alarming situation: 52 per cent of villagers of 18 years and above have no income at all. Of the whole population, 68 per cent have the annual expenses less than Rs 10,000.

Overall, 22 per cent are students, 16 per cent house wives, 10 per cent infants, 9 per cent each not school goers and household workers, 8 per cent farmers and 6 per cent labourers.

Most of the villagers wished if they had money to start their own business or build another room in their one-room houses.

Education wise, 36, 17 and 5 per cent have studied at the primary, secondary and higher secondary level respectively; 21 per cent are illiterate, 12 per cent are not enrolled so far; 4 per cent have completed masters and 2 per cent are studying at maddressah.

The survey work was started by a dedicated tam led by the community interim president, Muhammad Hussain. The team included secretary Arshad Ali, treasurer Mumtaz Ali and governing council members Sawan, Bakhir, Sain Dino and Natho. They were supported by three dedicated volunteers, Muhammad Adil, Rauf and Abdul Razzaq.

The concept of My Village Community is the brainchild of a villager, Rasool Bux Sathio alias Sarang, who works as a public relations professional at a private university in Karachi. “I will make the concept and the database templates public very soon so that other villages can follow the suit,” said Rasool Bux.

“After the final results of the survey, we will sit together and explore how the lives of our villagers can be changed,” he added.

Other main supporters behind the initiative were Shoukat Ali Sathio, Grievances Redressal Coordinator, Sindh at the International Organization for Migration; Feroz Sathio, Logistic Coordinator, Première Urgence – Aide Médicale Internationale, Sanaa, Yemen; and Gul Mohmmad Sathio, a social worker – all of them belong to the same village.
